What is the right strategy for mobilizing green finance development of Côte d'Ivoire?
This is the theme of the SDE EVENT to be held this Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at 1:30 pm. The initiative is supported by the French Ministry of Commerce, Industry and SME Promotion, and the CI PME Agency. This Business Forum will see the participation of business leaders from the private sector, including Mr. Patrice ADAYÉ, CEO of AGRO-MAP.
In 2015, ahead of the adoption of the Paris Agreement, Côte d'Ivoire submitted its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the UNFCCC, with an emissions reduction target of 28.25%. In response to the call for increased ambition, Côte d'Ivoire has undertaken to raise its mitigation and adaptation targets, and to accelerate forestry, land and energy reforms to make an effective contribution to poverty reduction. In its revised 2021 NDC presented at COP 26, Côte d'Ivoire aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30.41% (taking into account the Forestry sector not covered in the first 2015 submission), at an estimated overall cost of twenty-two billion US dollars. The coal option has also been abandoned in favor of an energy mix that includes a high proportion of renewable energies (46%), and the coal-fired plant will certainly be replaced by a natural gas plant. The Government's climate policy also rightly emphasizes the resilience of populations, women and young people, through green jobs, and the challenges of financing.
The fifteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will be held in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, from May 9 to 20, 2022. The theme of COP15 is "Earth. Life. Legacy: From scarcity to prosperity", is a call to action to ensure that the earth, the source of life on this planet, continues to benefit present and future generations. COP15 will bring together leaders from governments, the private sector, civil society and other key players from around the world to advance the sustainable management of one of our most precious assets: the earth.
Land is the foundation of a healthy and productive society, and COP15 will explore the links between land and other key sustainability issues. These issues will be examined at
the high-level segment on May 9 and 10, 2022, which will include a summit of Heads of State, high-level round tables and interactive dialogue sessions. COP15 is a key moment in the fight against desertification, land degradation and drought. It will build on the findings of the second edition of the Global Land Outlook and offer a concrete response to the interconnected challenges of land degradation, climate change and biodiversity loss, as we enter the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration. Drought, land restoration and related supporting factors such as land rights, gender equality and youth empowerment are among the main items on the conference agenda. Thanks to the decisions adopted by the 197 parties to the UNCCD, COP15 is expected to deliver sustainable solutions for land restoration and drought resilience, with a focus on the future of land use. During COP15, a number of special and parallel events will be organized around a variety of themes linked to the Conference theme. It is in this context that the Ministry of Trade, Industry and SME Promotion will be organizing a side event called COP15 ABIDJAN BUSINESS FORUM on the theme: "What strategies for mobilizing green finance through economic development in Côte d'Ivoire?"
Although funding is available from international institutions, as well as from private sources, difficulties, challenges and barriers persist for the private sector.
