- 160,000 mangrove and agroforestry seedlings to be planted
- 1,200 small producers benefit
- 2,600 hectares of coastal forest to be restored and protected
- Selected as one of Africa's top 100 forestry projects
Adiaké, Côte d'Ivoire - May 16, 2022: Blue Forest and AGRO-MAP have launched a major mangrove restoration project covering 2,600 hectares in Adiaké, in south-eastern Côte d'Ivoire.
The launch event took place during the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Abidjan.
Côte d'Ivoire has lost more than 10,000 hectares of coastal forest over the past 10 years. This project aims to reverse this trend and plant over 100,000 mangrove seedlings and 60,000 agroforestry trees near the Ehotile Islands National Park.
The agroforestry trees will be planted on plots belonging to small producers, so that over 1,200 small producers will be positively impacted by this agroforestry project.
This project is one of the top 100 projects selected from a pool of 3,200 applications in the "TerraFund for AFR100" program, managed by the World Resources Institute, One Tree Planted and Realize Impact, and includes backers such as: Bezos Earth Fund, Facebook, Good Energies Foundation, Lyda Hill Philanthropies, DOEN Foundation, AKO Foundation and Caterpillar Foundation.
Vahid Fotuhi, founder and CEO of Blue Forest, said: "This project is part of our ' Great Blue Wall' campaign and our commitment to restore 1 million hectares of mangrove forests in Africa by 2030. This is our first project in West Africa, and we hope to make it a world-class reference for climate adaptation.
Phase 2 of this project will extend the reforestation area to 10,000 hectares and implement what will become the largest blue carbon project in West Africa. The project will be financed by the carbon credit markets, with the majority of profits going to local communities to support climate change adaptation programs.
