This Tuesday, July 18, 2023 AGROMAP represented by its General Manager participated in a panel of experts organized by the magazine MADE IN AFRICA on the set of RTI1. The aim of the panel was to showcase private sector and government initiatives to restore forest cover in Côte d'Ivoire.
The panel was made up of Colonel-Major KOUASSI Lucien, DG of Fauna and Forests, Ministry of Water and Forests, Mr Benjamin Garnier, Country Representative of the NGO NITIDAE and Mr PIERRE JOSEPH KINGBO, DG of Green Invest Africa.
During the panel discussion, the Managing Director of AGRO-MAP SAS, Mr. Patrice ADAYE, spoke about the challenges and benefits of agroforestry and reforestation.
According to Patrice ADAYE, " Since independence, agriculture has been the driving force behind the Ivorian economy. This choice has enabled Côte d'Ivoire to position itself as the world's leading producer of cocoa, the world's leading producer of cashew nuts, and Africa's leading producer of rubber trees, to name but a few. These agricultural achievements have had a negative impact on the forest, which is now on the verge of extinction. "
In this context of maintaining agricultural activity and the needs of local populations, agroforestry is positioned as a credible alternative for sustainable and competitive agriculture in the face of the effects of climate change, and especially in view of the government's ambition to recover 20% of forest cover by 2030."
To achieve this ambitious goal, AGRO-MAP recommends :
- An inclusive approach, taking into account all stakeholders, in particular producers and communities;
- Encourage incentive mechanisms through Payments for Environmental Services (PES);
- Set up a regulatory framework to attract private investment via the voluntary carbon market;
- Promote the protection and conservation of residual forests and the assisted natural regeneration of forest species ;
- Increase community awareness of forest management policies and strategies
