Global Objective
Develop an agroforestry model on cocoa farms to strengthen farmers' resilience to climate change, contribute to carbon sequestration to meet Cargill West Africa 's commitments to end deforestation in its supply chain.
PROJECT SUMMARY
CARGILL WEST AFRICA has implemented an agroforestry project called " GREEN PROJECT2 ", which consists of providing volunteer producers with thirty (30) shade plants per hectare compatible with cocoa cultivation. These plants will be introduced into the producers' cocoa plantations. Through this project, CARGILL aims to contribute to the fight against deforestation and climate change. Shade trees ensure soil fertility, preserve biodiversity, help restore forest cover and increase cocoa production. To implement the project, CARGILL called on the expertise of AGRO-MAP, a company specializing in the implementation of sustainable development programs, the fight against global warming and the preservation of the environment.
PROJECT COMPONENTS
AWARENESS-RAISING AND TRAINING
- Awareness-raising and training for cocoa producers and their organizations on issues related to climate change.
PLANT PRODUCTION AND SUPPLY
- Installation and setting up of forest and fruit plant nurseries.
PLANTING
- Establishment of sustainable agroforestry systems by introducing forest and fruit trees into cocoa farms.
MONITORING
- Monitoring and evaluation of sustainable agroforestry systems.

Raising awareness and training growers in Agroforestry topics
Setting up cocoa-based agroforestry systems

PROJECT RESULTS
- More than 2,450 producers and their organizations have been sensitized and trained.
- Over 260,000 forest and fruit plants are produced and planted.
- Over 7,000 ha of sustainable agroforestry systems have been implemented on cocoa farms.
