BACKGROUND
Côte d'Ivoire's forest cover has been declining sharply since the 1960s. In a bid to reverse the deforestation trend, the Ivorian government has facilitated the implementation of a Framework for Action supported by stakeholders in the agricultural sector (the Cocoa and Forest Initiative).
In line with this initiative, ON A MISSION has developed a reforestation and agroforestry project with small cocoa producers in Côte d'Ivoire.
AGRO-MAP was asked to act as technical partner in implementing the project's activities.
OBJECTIVES
The aim of this project is to help restore forest cover in the GAGNOA area.
Specifically, this involves:
- Raise awareness among communities, cocoa growers and their organizations about the challenges of climate change, sustainable development and forest protection;
- Produce and supply forest and fruit plants;
- Restore community forest plantations and set up sustainable agroforestry systems;
- Monitor and maintain agroforestry systems and reforested plots.
RESULTS
- Over 7,000 forest and fruit plants produced.
- More than 5 communities and producers sensitized.
- Forest and fruit trees are planted on reforestation plots.
- At least 6 ha of forest ecosystems restored and protected.
- Plot monitoring guaranteed.
