
BACKGROUND
In order to support the Ivorian government's efforts and provide a response to deforestation in Côte d'Ivoire, BARRY-CALLEBAUT, a company in the cocoa industry, has committed itself, through its subsidiary SACO, to contributing to the reconstitution of the Ivorian forest cover. To this end, it has initiated the "AGROFORESTRY NEW APPROACH" project to ensure sustainable cocoa production by transforming cocoa plots in its catchment area into sustainable agroforestry systems, while improving the standard of living of the members of its partner cooperatives.
AGRO-MAP was commissioned to implement the project.
OBJECTIVES
Supporting agroforestry and forest restoration projects for the benefit of its network of producers.
- Making forest and fruit tree seedlings available to growers in BARRY-CALLEBAUT's partner cooperatives
- Ensure the implementation of cocoa-based agroforestry systems in the cocoa plots of BARRY-CALLEBAUT's partner producers.
- Raising awareness and training producers and their organizations
- Monitor trees planted in producers' cocoa plots
- Assessing carbon stocks.
RESULTS
- Over 200,000 forest and fruit seedlings produced and distributed
- Over 2,800 hectares of cocoa plots transformed into sustainable agroforestry systems
- More than 1,400 producers and their organizations are sensitized and trained
- 17 cooperative companies benefit from technical support
- Over 1,400 producers are coached
- Monitoring of over 200,000 forest and fruit seedlings planted.
