BACKGROUND
For over thirty years, Côte d'Ivoire has been the world's leading producer of cocoa beans, accounting for almost 40% of the global supply, thanks to the activities of some 800,000 producers operating plots of land ranging from 1 to 5 hectares. However, this model is based on extensive farming practices, giving priority to increasing cultivated areas rather than improving yields. This approach has led to massive deforestation and forest degradation, with an average annual loss of around 450,000 hectares, jeopardizing the country's forest cover, which could disappear by 2040 if no corrective measures are taken.
Aware of the impact of climate change and the importance of preserving forests, the Ivorian government and players in the chocolate industry are committed to promoting sustainable agroforestry systems on cocoa farms. These systems aim to improve yields while protecting the environment and limiting the effects of deforestation.
Against this backdrop, FILDISI COCOA INDUSTRY has launched an agroforestry project designed to revitalize cocoa-growing areas and support the national commitment to reduce deforestation in its supply chain. This project represents a concrete approach to reconciling agricultural productivity and environmental protection, while contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
OBJECTIVES
FILDISI COCOA INDUSTRY, through this project, aims to support the implementation of agroforestry and forest restoration projects for the benefit of its network of growers, while strengthening their resilience in the face of climate change. More specifically, the objectives for this 2025 campaign are as follows:
-
Produce and make available quality forest and fruit tree seedlings for agroforestry systems;
-
Raise awareness and train producers and their organizations on the benefits of the project, climate change, environmental preservation, agroforestry principles and tree ownership;
-
Ensure the implementation of cocoa-based agroforestry systems;
-
Train beneficiary producers in agricultural entrepreneurship, and set up and monitor income-generating activities (IGAs);
-
Carry out monitoring trees planted in producers' cocoa plots;
RESULTS
At the end of the implementation of the project activities, the following results are expected:
- 15 000 quality forest and fruit seedlings are produced and supplied to set up agroforestry systems;
- At least 314 producers have been made aware of the benefits of the project, the problems of climate change, environmental conservation and the principles of agroforestry;
- At least 633.169 hectares of sustainable agroforestry systems have been installed on cocoa farms;
- At least 314 beneficiary producers are trained in agricultural entrepreneurship, management and the implementation of Income Generating Activities (IGA);
- Planted trees are monitored;
