BACKGROUND
Cocoa cultivation is an important sector in the Ivorian economy, accounting for around 40% of world production. More than six million people work in the cocoa sector, and 70-80% of farmers' incomes depend on it. However, the sustainability of cocoa production faces major challenges, including declining yields and the impact of climate change.
With an 80% reduction in forest cover since 1960, Côte d'Ivoire now has one of the highest deforestation rates in the world. According to the Bureau National d'Études Techniques et Développement (BNETD), cocoa cultivation, through the extension of agriculture onto forest land, is one of the main direct contributors to the depletion of forest resources.
To help stop this deforestation, Lindt & Sprüngli is committed to sourcing all its cocoa from deforestation-free areas by 2025 (covered by a fully implemented action plan against deforestation with agroforestry) through its action plan against deforestation and agroforestry practices, in collaboration with its supply chain partners.
Lindt & Sprüngli has appointed AGROMAP to implement the pilot phase of a vast agroforestry project. This 03-year pilot phase covers 3,000 hectares of cocoa plantations belonging to at least 1,500 producers within the UPAS cooperative.
MAIN OBJECTIVES
LINDT & SPRÜNGLI aims to reduce its emissions so as to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 by improving the living conditions of the producers in its supply chain.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
- The implementation of agroforestry in its supply chain ;
- Improving producers' living conditions through a PES model and diversifying sources of income;
- Carbon sequestration.
EXPECTED RESULTS
- 1 : At least 3,000 ha of cocoa plots are transformed into cocoa-based agroforestry plots;
- 2 : At least 3000 ha of cocoa plots are diagnosed and mapped;
- 3 : At least 252,000 forest and fruit seedlings of different strata compatible with cocoa trees are produced and distributed to farmers' plots;
- 4 : The improvement of producers' living conditions through a PES model and the diversification of income sources is ensured;
- 5 : The project's carbon sequestration potential is measured and verified by certified organizations;
- 6 : At least 05 women's and/or producers' groups are set up, trained and supported in setting up income-generating activities (IGAs);
- 7 : At least 05 community self-help groups are set up, trained and supported in the pruning of 3,000 ha of cocoa plots;
- 8 : Planted trees are monitored and dead plants are replaced;
