
BACKGROUND
CARGILL WEST AFRICA has set up an agroforestry project called "GREEN PROJECT2", which involves making forest and fruit seedlings compatible with cocoa farms available to producers in its supply chain. Through this project, CARGILL aims to contribute to the fight against deforestation and climate change.
Shade trees ensure soil fertility, preserve biodiversity, help restore forest cover and increase cocoa production. To implement the project, CARGILL called on the expertise of AGROMAP, a company specializing in the implementation of agroforestry, reforestation and environmental conservation programs.
General objective:
The overall aim of the project is to implement agroforestry models on cocoa farms in order to strengthen farmers' resilience in the face of climate change.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
- Produce and plant 1,600,000 forest and fruit seedlings;
- Raise awareness and train 13,500 producers in agroforestry, cocoa-based agroforestry systems, the new forestry code and tree ownership;
- Establish 32,000 ha of cocoa-based agroforestry systems;
- Strengthen producers' resilience by diversifying their income ;
RESULTS
- More than 1,600,000 forest and fruit plants are produced and planted;
- Some 13,500 producers and their organizations are being sensitized and trained in agroforestry, cocoa-based agroforestry systems, the new forestry code and tree ownership;
- More than 32,000 ha of sustainable agroforestry systems have been implemented on cocoa farms;
- Producers' resilience is strengthened by diversifying their income;
